Welcome back!

Fall is in the air and CAPA is ready to kick off a new year of fundraising and supporting the arts at Wayland high school. Won’t you join us? Come to our first meeting on September 20 at 8pm in the WHS Library. Meet the CAPA board and other members and find out how you can get involved, whether it’s helping us organize the College A Cappella Concerts in fall and spring, writing articles, taking photographs at events… We have many volunteer opportunities, large and small, for people who want to participate all year long or just for a couple of hours. You can also help us out by donating. All proceeds benefit the arts programs and fine arts students.

Fine Arts Night is Friday, June 10

Friday, June 10
WHS Auditorium and Commons
Awards 7:00-8:00pm
Student Celebration 8:00-9:30pm

Calling all WHS fine arts students! The Creative Arts Parent Association (CAPA) presents WHS Fine Arts Night. As in past years, Fine Arts Night has two parts:

Awards Ceremony, 7-8pm
Families are welcome – We will meet in WHS Auditorium for the presentation of awards to all Fine Arts students, including awarding of Fine Arts jackets.

Student Celebration, 8-9:30pm
WHS Fine Arts students and alumni only. Stay after the awards ceremony and enjoy pizza, karaoke, snow cones, popcorn, and more!

Parents, please consider helping out as a chaperone or volunteer. We will be providing pizza, drinks, popcorn, and treats as well as a karaoke DJ. We need parent chaperones from 8:00-9:30pm (you can sign up for 45-minute slots) and parent helpers to bring drinks, clean up, and operate food machines.

Here’s how it works in two easy steps:

1) Sign up on VolunteerSpot
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.

Great Spring College A Cappella Concert on March 19, 2016

Saturday, March 19, 7:30pm
WHS Main Stage

We had a great turnout and fantastic singing at the Spring College A Cappella Concert! The Brick City Singers from RIT got the evening off to a great start with their rock and doo-wop repertoire. Even their shirts sported festive spring colors. The Brown’sTones from Brown University blew us away with their Dig Medley, The Chain, and more. The Nor’easters from Northeastern made us Sorry to see their set end the show. They filled the auditorium with their strong voices, even when singing without microphones! Wayland’s Muses, T-Tones and Madrigals also performed strong sets. The audience showed their appreciation throughout with applause, hoots, cheers and a standing ovation. And as always, the free dessert buffet at intermission was consumed with great gusto.

Thanks to all the performers and volunteers for making the show so successful, and thanks to everyone who came out to support the arts at Wayland High School!

Our next concert will be in December 2016. Watch this space and follow us on Facebook for announcements of the groups and concert date.

Eight Musicians Selected for All State

by Susan Memoli

It is my pleasure to announce that Wayland High School has 8 students who were selected for the 2016 MMEA All State Music Festival!

The auditionees were selected to audition based on their high scores from the Eastern District Senior Festival. The top scoring students from all 5 MA geographic districts auditioned at Shrewsbury High School on 1/23. The audition included a prepared selection, scales and sight reading.

Congratulations to the largest Wayland representation in recent memory! These students will participate in rehearsals March 10-11 in Boston and perform at Symphony Hall on March 12, 2016.

While we may be best known for producing the beloved College A Cappella concerts every fall and spring, our core mission is to fund innovative programs through grants that benefit over 500 students in our arts classes and extracurricular groups, including over $20,000 in grants over the past three years going to:

  • Master classes and field trips
  • New keyboards, a music workstation, amplifiers, guitars and an electric violin
  • High-quality art supplies for sculpture, metalwork, calligraphy and other classroom art projects
  • Registration fees, transportation, and scholarships for music festivals and All State
  • Art hanging system for exhibitions at the high school

What a great concert! A packed theater came to enjoy the Fall College A Cappella Concert, with a fantastic line-up of first-rate a cappella groups including UMass Amherst Vocal Suspects, Emmanuel College For Good Measure, and The Harvard Din & Tonics.
