Jazz Saxophonist Nathan Childers to visit WHS January 9

Joe Oneschuk reports some exciting news: a very special guest Artist-In-Residence Day.  On Wednesday January 9, 2013, Wayland High School will host New York jazz recording artist/performer, Nathan Childers. Mr. Childers is a premier New York City-based saxophonist who is also an endorsed artist for the Yamaha and Rico corporations. He will spend the entire day at WHS working with Honors Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Songwriting Class, and Honors Jazz Ensemble.  He will discuss such topics as:

  • Practice tips & preparation
  • Tips for making it in the music industry
  • Techniques on playing classical and pop music
  • Reed and instrument care.

Seeking CAPA volunteers

It has been a great year for the fine arts at WHS, and we want to thank all of you have have helped out in any way this year! This year we have awarded almost $7000 in grants to music, theater and the visual arts. It wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated, wonderful parents who volunteer their time.

Come join our team! It’s fun – and we have many jobs that are small and / or can be done from home. All of them support the arts – and get you involved with other art-friendly parents. Here’s what we need:

Board Member / Secretary: Come to monthly meetings and keep minutes; come to board meetings; can be involved in grant committee.

Membership / Mailings: Empty CAPA mailbox at WHS; keep track of donations; organize mailing in fall. Most tasks can be done from home.

PR / Publicity: Join PR team and help get the word out about WHS fine arts events and our a cappella concerts. Most tasks can be done from home.

Choral Liaison: Support Rachel Carroll during the school year; coordinate parent help for refreshments at chorus concerts.

Orchestra Liaison: Support Susan Memoli during school year; coordinate parent help for refreshments at orchestra concerts.

Writers for theater shows: Do a write-up for a show – work with theater liaisons and PR coordinator.

Fine Arts Night Coordinator: Organize celebration in June for all fine arts students.

A Cappella Fundraising Committee: Looking for new members to help with our biggest fundraiser.

David Lang conducts master class for art students

Janet Armentano reports that David Lang spent Monday, April 23rd giving a presentation to five art classes at the high school.  He brought three kinetic sculptures with him and the students looked at his art on his website and his blog via the smartboard. Students found him to be fascinating and loved his work.  Janet said he inspired the creative spirit in many of them.
